Drama series House of Cards has won an Emmy, becoming the first online-only TV show to do so, as the likes of Netflix and Amazon continue to rival traditional TV companies in producing original content.

House of Cards director David Fincher won the drama directing Emmy award for the series which has already been nominated for 14 primetime Emmy awards this year – which is a first in itself.
However, this is the first time any online-only platforms has won a marquee Emmy that is accepted in front of the national broadcast audience.
Netflix also won a Creative Arts Emmy for casting and another for cinematography – but they were at a separate ceremony.
Netflix has more than 30 million streaming subscribers and took an unorthodox approach to developing the series.
It committed $100 million for two seasons of the show upfront, without requiring a pilot as networks generally do. And it distributed all 13 episodes of the first season at once to facilitate binge-viewing.
