A staggering 1 in every 5 people online are from China, and there is still plenty of room for growth amongst its 1.3 billion plus citizens, according to new data. Online statistic portal Statista has assembled an infographic displaying key trends amongst Chinese citizens, as the country begins to match the US in terms of internet use.


According to the infographic, which takes data from various sources, China now has nearly half a billion internet users.
More than one in five netizens are Chinese and spend on average as much time online per week as Americans.
In stark difference to their western counterparts, Chinese web users prefer instant messaging over social networks.
With tight bans on social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter in China, Chinese web users tend to turn to portals and online message boards instead.
