Amazon is launching its AutoRip service in the UK, giving customers that have bought music CDs from the online retailer a free digital version, in a bid to entice music fans away from rival iTunes.
The service, initially launched in the US in December 2012, will provide MP3 copies of their CDs from as far back as 1999 .
AutoRip albums purchased since the Music Store first opened in the UK will be automatically added to the customers Cloud Player account for free.
Amazon says that currently more than 350,000 albums are available for AutoRip, with more titles being added continuously.
Two months ago, Amazon added vinyl records to its AutoRip service, automating the entire process of copying vinyl records into a digital format, with a caveat that only records with the AutoRip logo are applicable for the service.
AutoRip music can be played from any Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire, Android phone or tablet, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, as well as any Web browser.
“What would you say if you bought CDs, vinyl or even cassettes from a company 14 years ago, and then 14 years later that company licensed the rights from the record companies to give you the MP3 versions of those albums… and then to top it off, did that for you automatically and for free?” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “Well, starting today, it’s available to all of our Amazon.co.uk customers – past, present, and future – at no cost. We love these opportunities to do something extra for our customers.”
The top 10 albums sold by Amazon.co.uk since 1999 are as follows (all eligible for AutoRip):
