As Lance Armstrong falls from grace (and Nike’s sponsorship roster), another controversial sporting figure has made a return to the sports brand’s video ads. Tiger Woods battles Rory McIlroy in this humourous golfing tee-off where ‘no cup is safe’. See why it’s our video viral of the week below…
Nike has welcomed the world’s current number-one golf player, Rory McIlroy, to its roster, in a deal said to be the most money-intensive ever signed in the game.
To celebrate, Nike Golf teamed its newest star with its most famous (and infamous) athlete, Tiger Woods, for a bit of sport-specific one-upmanship.
In the spot, the golfers face off on a golf course, taking turns making near-impossible shots, landing balls first in the cup on the green, then in a series of less and less likely off-course cups.
In the ad, McIlroy, 23, calls Woods an “old man”, while Woods, 37, makes fun of McIlroy’s hair.
Tiger Woods never lost his Nike sponsorship deal, but has played a lower profile role in the brand’s endorsements since 2009, when he admitted to infidelity.
The commercial, produced by agency Wieden+Kennedy, came out earlier this week and became an immediate YouTube hit. To date, it has surpassed 7 million views.
