The Stephen King’s cult classic ‘It’ returned to cinema screens recently, showing a killer clown wreaking havoc by murdering innocent children.
Germany’s Burger King was eager to capitalise on this cultural moment released a funny smear campaign video ad about McDonald’s.
During screenings in Germany, the brand projected two spotlights right before the credits at the film premiere in Germany.
In an effort to villainize McDonald’s, they simply turned that infamous McDonald’s “I’m loving it” phrase into “I’m loving IT.”
The tongue-in-cheek attack ad ends with an ominous warning. “The moral is: never trust a clown,” referencing the fast food rival’s mascot. The closer: “Burger King.”
The ad worked in the cinema, generating plenty of laughs to release the tension of the horror film, but the subsequent online viral helped amplify the message to a wider audience.
Rabbicorn Films, Grabarz & Partner Werbeagentur, setup, Emanate and Vizeum Deutschland handled the work.
