If you were the world’s leader in search, and wanted to dominate the wider online travel category, then you’d need a small amount of quality data to form the heart of your listings. Hot on the heels of acquiring the Zagat restaurant guides, Google has bought a travel publisher, filled with premium travel photos, illustration and data. Google has bought Frommer’s, a publisher of popular travel guidebooks, as the internet giant looks to boost its travel and local content.
The move will give Google a trove of publishing content that could strengthen its push to become a major online travel broker.
Google bought the firm from form publisher John Wiley & Sons, and comes nearly a year after Google’s $151 million purchase of Zagat Survey, which offers reviews of restaurants, hotels and nightclubs in cities around the world.
Google and Wiley & Sons did not announce financial terms for the deal, which is expected to close shortly.
The deal will meld the 55-year-old travel publisher’s deep database of hotels and sights into a search giant that is seeking to position its services across the entire trip-planning process, from searching for a holiday destination and looking up hotel reviews to booking tours and restaurants.
