Fifty years on from the Apollo 11 mission – which saw astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins successfully land (and walk) on the moon, new research from Taboola has shown whose popularity remains out of this world – including two female astronauts winning the battle for social media.
Taboola has collected and analysed data from sites where its products are installed and user permission is granted. This includes:

- +100 million unique users
- +270 million pageviews
- +300 million minutes spent reading related content
- 158 countries included worldwide
Taboola’s research highlights that Apollo 11 is the second most read about mission to space, with their famous crew Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin still the most popular astronauts, with the majority of their readers coming directly to their articles or through search channels.
With so much support around female athletes following the Women’s World Cup, Taboola has discovered that female astronauts Sally Ride and Judith Resnik are the queens of social, driving the most traffic on social media by light-years.
Other interesting facts from the research include the 1958 Explorer 1 mission driving the most intent search, whereas Redstone 3 mission had the most direct shares yet, interestingly, with no social media engagement at all. Other famous astronauts such as Gus Grissom, who was the second American to enter space, and Alan Shepherd, who walked on the moon in 1971, gained a large amount of engagement from intent based search channels based on Taboola’s research.
