Google is shutting down its Latitude social location service on 9th August, as the internet giant overhauls its mapping services and continues to integrate its Google+ social network across its core businesses.
As part of the shut down, all of Latitude’s various location-centric APIs will go offline.
Additionally, Google is removing check-in functionality from Maps, asking that users do so via Google+ instead.
Google+ will also be used to share location with friends- a feature not currently enabled in the iOS version of the app.
Google promises that functionality is “coming soon”.
The service Google will be retiring on August 9th include Google Latitude in Google Maps for Android, Latitude for iPhone, the Latitude API, the public badge, the iGoogle Gadget, and the Latitude website at maps.google.com/latitude.
