Instagram is reportedly planning a private and group messaging feature, as the Facebook- owned photo sharing service looks to rival the likes of SnapChat and WhatsApp in the fast-growing chat app sector.
The potential move comes as Instagram faces tough competition from the like of Snapchat, WhatsApp and WeChat which already offer a private photo and video sharing service.
Instagram currently has 150 million active monthly users, a figure expected to receive a boost from the app’s recent launch on Windows Phone.
In other changes, the Facebook-owned service has started advertising in the US for the first time.
Co-founder Kevin Systrom has indicated that new advertising images are attracting ‘likes’ from 5% of users.
