Amazon has boasted that it tripled the number of applications on its Android app store in the last year alone, but the online retailer still siginificanly trails Google Play and the Apple App store in terms of overall downloads.
The firm claims that that for developers the option is a real contender that earns outfits similar revenues to those of the other app stores. This was found by an IDC survey that was sponsored by Amazon.
Despite the growth Amazon seems desperate for more developer attention, and in its statements it painted the picture that its Appstore is paved with gold.
“Developers tell us that they experience improved reach, greater monetisation, and, often times, higher revenue when they have their apps and games in the Amazon Appstore,” said Amazon VP of Appstore and games Mike George.
“Amazon’s Appstore can help developers distribute their apps on Android devices all over the world. It’s a great time for developers to bring their apps to the Amazon Appstore.”
The Amazon store has tripled its content to over 240,000 apps and games, but is rather dwarfed by the competition in terms of range and scale.
Apple has 1.2 million apps and 75 billion downloads. The Google Play store has 1.2 million apps as of this month, according to Wikipedia. Google’s Gmail app was recently crowned the first to pass one billion downloads on Android alone.
