Consumers have downloaded more than 40 billion apps from the Apple App Store in just over four years, with almost half of them happening during 2012, according to new figures. The data, released by Apple, indicate it had a particularly strong Christmas period, with two billion app downloads in December last year. The manufacturer said there are now 500 million active accounts in its App Store, downloading from more than 775,000 apps.
Developers have made more than $7bn since the store launched in 2008.
Eddy Cue, senior vice-president of internet software and services at Apple, said: “It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community. Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”
