BlackBerry has announced that its BBM Music service is to shut down, less than a year and a half after its launch.

The Canadian firm will pull the plug on the music-sharing platform on June 2, with paying customers being billed for the last time in April.
BBM Music subscribers will each receive a free 30-day pass for music streaming service Rdio as a means of compensation.
The service let users download 50 tracks for $4.99 a month encouraged them to invite BBM contacts to join the service to get their 50 songs in the process.
“BBM Music service will be discontinued as of June 2. For paying customers, April is the last month that you will be billed. In May, as your BBM contacts stop using the service, songs in your playlists will begin to turn grey and will no longer be available,” read a statement from BlackBerry.
“Though BBM Music is going away, you can still listen to great music on your BlackBerry. We’re giving you a 30-day pass to Rdio, which gives you unlimited, on-demand access to more than 18 million songs, including the latest hits and classic albums.”
BlackBerry launched the subscription-based BBM Music in 2011, allowing users to compile a library of up to 50 songs and share it with other users via its messenger platform.
The company did not reveal why the service has been discontinued.
