Microsoft is far behind Apple in terms of global tablet sales and market share, and the deal comes as the software giant looks to boost its mobile reach as users switch from PCs to smartphones and tablets for their daily computing needs.
Under the deal, only available in the US, a “gently used” iPad 2, 3, or 4 will be worth a ‘ a minimum of $200’ in vouchers to put towards either a new Surface or “other cool products at the Microsoft Store.”
The Surface RT currently costs around $349, while Surface Pro starts at $799. The iPad trade-in offer runs until 27 October.
The news comes a week before Microsoft is set to unveil its next-gen Surface tablets.
The deal does not apply online, and it only allows for one trade in per customer, and the voucher value will be determined by electronics buy back firm CExchange.
In the first quarter of this year, Apple shipped 19.5 million iPads, compared with 900,000 Microsoft tablets.
In the second quarter, Microsoft shipped only 300,000 Surface devices, technology publication CiteWorld said.
Although Microsoft announced a revenue of $853 million on Surface sales in its latest financial regulatory filing, the company took a $900 million loss after failing to shift Surface RT devices.
