Tablet commerce will triple this year to reach £4.74 billion and take 10.4 per cent of total UK online sales, according to research


Retail sales via mobile devices in the UK are expected to more than double this year to £8.17 billion, accounting for 18 per cent of all ecommerce, according to research.
Tablet commerce will triple this year to reach £4.74 billion and take 10.4 per cent of total UK online sales, show eMarketer’s latest forecasts. By 2017 that figure will reach nearly £18 billion and account for over a quarter of all UK ecommerce.
For the first time, more mcommerce sales will occur on tablets than smartphones, with tablets expected to account for 58 per cent of all retail sales in the UK, with 40.5 per cent coming from smartphones.
The tablet is fast becoming a mass-market device in the UK and it is estimated that 20 million people – more than one in three consumers in the UK – will use one this year.
The company predicts robust growth of 18 per cent in overall ecommerce sales this year, to £45.40 billion, and this growth will continue at double-digit rates for several years to come. With total retail sales remaining almost flat, online shopping’s share will continue to increase.
Earlier this year it was reported that online shopping is to grow by 50pc over the next five years and will account for one pound in every seven spent by UK consumers in 2018.
The online retail industry will be worth £50bn in 2018 as the rapid growth in spending through smartphones and tablets continues, retail consultancy Verdict said.
