Google’s Brandon Jones has announced that he’s working on a way to add virtual reality support for Oculus Rift and Google’s own smartphone VR app Cardboard into Chrome.
Although browsing the web using a virtual reality device is unlikely to be radically different, it does have some potential applications, such as allowing users to view life-sized goods before purchasing them. Jones believes that 360-degree product shots and interactive exhibits should be reasonably easy to create and use.
The move offers a similar announcement from rival FireFox in June.
New Oculus Rift development kits will be distributed this month as the product edges closer to its consumer launch.
Earlier this year, Oculus VR was acquired by Facebook. The social media company has vowed not to redesign or rebrand the Oculus Rift.
This week, software was launched for Oculus Rift that lets users explore the town of South Park from the eponymous TV show.
