The sales of goods through smartphones now account for more than a 10th of all purchases on eBay, according to new figures. The online marketplace said more people in this country were buying and selling goods via mobile than elsewhere in Europe. More than two million items were bought on eBay through a mobile last month, including a house and a £70,000 Ferrari car.

Angus McCarey, retail director for eBay UK, said: “With consumers having instant access on the move, mobile shopping has come of age. While it took years for internet shopping to become mainstream, we believe mobile commerce will do it in less than half the time. We have never before seen such significant year over year growth.”
Meanwhile, eBay has launched a new marketing campaign in the US, with six 30-second TV commercials appearing on some of the most popular cable shows to promote shopping from a mobile phone.
The spots will appear on “Top Gear,” “SportsCenter,” “Tosh.0,” “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” “Top Chef” and “The Rachel Zoe Project.”
The campaign’s tagline is “When it’s on your mind, it’s on eBay.”
The ad campaign, which will also feature QR Codes and online ads, including YouTube and Yahoo homepage takeovers, was created by independent San Francisco ad agency Venables Bell & Partners.
