The number of users accessing Facebook via mobile devices has increased by 54% to 100m mobile users in the last six months, according to stats released by the social network. According to an official release, this has happened in less than a period of six months after Facebook had announced a figure of 65 million people using Facebook via their mobile devices. The figures alos come less than a week after Facebook announced it was set to exceed 400 million users in total.

Facebook’s VP of mobile, Chamath Palihapitiya describes the fact that a quarter of its users now access the service from their mobile phones as “another milestone.
Facebook has also launched the XMPP protocol of their Chat platform in order to make Facebook Chat available everywhere thereby letting all users of messaging clients such as iChat, Pidgin, Adium, Miranda.
The new features let developers build applications and customise them for the mobile platform thereby generating more revenue by means of advertisement.
Facebook Chat has been extended into Facebook Connect too which will again let developers to build chat experiences into their website, desktop or mobile instant-messaging applications and services.
