British shoppers spent £4.67bn online during December – equivalent to £76.67 for every person in the UK, reports the IMRG. According to the latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index the results for December were up 14.2% year-on-year. However, monthly growth fell 1.5% for the first time since December 2002 as a result of November’s record sales (which include the peak shopping weekend of the 29th and 30th November).
Of 2,000 consumers surveyed, 37% said that they did the majority of their Christmas shopping online. Of these, 60% said that they spent more online in 2008 than in 2007. Overall, 44.35% said that they went online to check the best prices.
The IMRG predicts that online sales will continue to grow by about 15% per year for the foreseeable future, surpassing £50bn in 2009 for the first time. Further research from the 2009 Logan Tod Online Shopping Index also anticipates further growth, with half of UK adults planning to spend more online for Christmas 2009.
