China’s online population grew almost 42% year-on-year to reach 298m at the end of 2008, writes Netimperative. The figures, from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), confirm the country’s position as the world’s largest internet nation. Internet penetration rates rose to 22.6%, just above the global average of 21.9%. The number of Chinese mobile phone-based internet users also increased in 2008 rising 113% to 117.6m following the recent granting of third-generation (3G) licenses.
