In an interview with Buzzfeed, editor and publisher of Mail’s digital properties, Martin Clarke, attributed the growth to an increase in U.S. traffic. The numbers were based on information from comScore, an online tracking service.
A spokesperson from the New York Times rebutted the new information regarding Mail Online’s traffic.
The Times’ Eileen Murphy told Buzzfeed that the Mail only surpassed New York Times by including more of their properties. As standalone newspapers, Murphy said the Times remains as the number one newspaper site worldwide.
As of November 2011, the Times was the third most circulated newspaper in the U.S. The Wall Street Journal and USA Today were the first and second most circulated newspapers in the U.S. As a whole, global circulation of newspapers was down for the second consecutive year.
