Google revealed the numbers as it announced a new redesign for the image search service. The new look search engine serves a mosaic of up to 1000 image thumbnails per page, with no extraneous text. Scrolling over the images provides a hovering thumbnail preview which gives further information and web address for the picture.
The redesign has also implemented better keyboard navigation for faster navigation through the results.
Google are also introducing a new ad format dubbed Image Search Ads which will appear in the new images search results.
The new design is being rolled out over the coming week.
