The iOS app now has 27 million registered users. It also has the highest possible average user rating of five stars across nearly 400,000 reviews.
Speaking at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom announced the debut of the highly-anticipated Android app, promising it will be released “very soon”.
Systrom did not provide attendees with a demo of the new app, but did say the app was testing in private beta.
Instagram’s other co-founder, Mike Krieger also said the Android app has been a long time coming because the company wanted to maintain its focus and develop its iOS counterpart, adding that Android developers have been impressed with the beta version of the app.
The company is working on raising an additional $40 million (£25.5 million), bringing the company to a $500 million (£319 million) valuation.
