Nokia is going to connect the “next billion” people to internet using its mobile technology and “locally relevant Ovi services”.The manufacturer made the declaration on the final day of the Nokia World event, calling in Sir Tim Berners-Lee to help fight the cause.
Mary McDowell, Nokia’s Executive Vice President for Mobile Phones, said: “More people will join the information age using a mobile phone than a PC. With approximately 80 percent of the world’s population in reach of a cell tower, it is the mobile phone that will offer the first PC-like experience for many of the next billion people who will come online.”

She added that Nokia has both the technological capabilities and the local knowledge of different markets to offer people what they need and at prices they can afford.
Sir Tim Berners-Lee urged networks to offer free low-bandwidth data allowances on all calling packages to enable as many of that 80 percent access to information and services as possible.
He said: “I would like to see people enrolled in a cheap data plan by default. I would like them to get it for free.”
Nokia say it’s already offering some useful services, such as Ovi Life Tools and Nokia Money. The former helps emerging markets by providing access to the Internet for education, entertainment, health, business improvement and self improvement. And the latter helps consumers by giving them access to basic financial services on their phones.
