Broadcaster Sky is rebranding all of its mobile and on-line offerings into a single package called Sky Go. The service, which is free to existing subscribers, brings Sky Player and Sky Mobile TV to multiple platforms including Windows PCs and Apple’s iOS and OSX operating systems allowing users to watch ‘live’ Sky programmes in line with their subscriptions.

Launching on July 6th, mobile users will be able to watch all five Sky Sports, ESPN and Sky news while desk-bound computers will also have access to more than 30 channels including Sky Movies, Sky 1, Aky Atlantic, Sky Arts, MTV, Disney, GOLD, Nickelodeon and a bunch of ‘on demand’ content.
From August Sky Go will also be available for those without a dish, or a wall to stick it on, with new monthly subscription plans for computer and smartphone users costing between £15 and £40.
Subscribers will also be able to use Sky’s recently-acquired Wi-Fi network, The Cloud, at 4,500 public hotspots throughout the UK and Ireland.
At launch Sky will enable just two devices to be registered to each account.
“The explosion of smartphones and tablets demonstrates the increasing consumer demand for accessing entertainment and communicating on the move,” said Sky’s Stephen van Rooyen. “We have already responded to this by offering a range of services, including live TV, across many new innovative platforms and devices, like laptops and iPhones.
“Clearly the consumer appetite is there, and it’s growing. In responding to that, and to create even more value, choice and flexibility for our customers, we are now going to offer online and mobile access to Sky content at no extra charge. The future support of a nationwide Wi-Fi network will help us supercharge that experience further still.”
Sky says that the addition of more channels to the service, and expansion of The Cloud network, would be announced in due course.
