Social media was ruled by Facebook in 2013, with Pinterest Skype and Twitter all performing well across a range of countries, according to new data from Bing.


In its review of Bing’s top searches for the year, Microsoft revealed that Facebook remained firmly affixed to the number-one spot in the social media category among Americans.
“Facebook came in as the most searched social media platform for the second year in a row,” said Microsoft in a company blog post.
USA’s most searched social networks of 2013
A new entry on several of Bing’s most searched lists, pinboard-based image-sharing site Pinterest has rocketed to number two in the US. From wedding ideas, to recipes and much more, Americans couldn’t get enough of Pinterest this year.

The UK’s most searched social networks of 2013
The high popularity of professional networking is also evident, with career-focused site Linkedin finding a place in several top 10s alongside its social counterparts, such as in the UK. In 2013, the website announced that it had reached over 250 million registered users.

Spain’s home-grown social networking site Tuenti also had an increasing presence, coming in second in the top 10 behind big-player Facebook.

Japan’s most searched social networks of 2013
2013 was the year Twitter really hit the big time, with the microblogging site filing for an initial public offering and being on the New York Stock Exchange for the first time in September. Valued at around $31million at the end of its first day, the site tops the list in Japan, ahead of fellow US-based company Facebook and Japan-based Mixi.

Italy’s most searched social networks of 2013

Germany’s most searched social networks of 2013
The top 10 for Germany has a distinctly local feel, with three of the top four social networks – Jappy, Wer-kennt-wen and Xing – founded within the central European country, along with ninth-placed Stayfriends.

France’s most searched social networks of 2013
Over in France, rapidly-growing image-and-photo sharing site Instagram – which also allows users to digitally edit their pictures and share them through other social applications – is the third most searched for networking site. Its parent company Facebook once again takes number one spot.
